I have not found a workaround for this problem. The other problem was that when I used it with the latest version of Skype (Version 4.1), Skype would exit after each call and had to be manually restarted. Basically a very sound product, but I found two glitches when I installed and started using it. Ouch. Please read on.As another reviewer noted, it does not pass DTMF tones properly. This makes it less than useful for accessing conference calling services or other applications (like online banking) that require you to enter data via the telephone touch pad. To overcome this problem, I installed an older version of Skype (Version 4.0), which works just fine.Bottom line, if you just want to make voice calls using Skype, this is a cheap, reliable little box. But it has its limitations.
I tried to trouble shoot this but think it is a design flaw. I tried to use this product with skype. The product technically "works," however, when you hang up, it closes skype. It really isn't worth it, even though you can use the product, if you have to reopen skype each time you want to make a call. The vendor refunded my money with no hassle.
You do have to remember to dial #, but that wasn't hard to deal with. The Skytone Gateway product works well. The only thing we discovered as a problem was that they do not pass DTMF tones, although Skype is supposed to according to a recent article I read, so it must be the Skytone device that is preventing DTMF. We setup four of these on four spare computers when we were moving one of our offices and couldn't immediately get the phone service we wanted, but we did have Internet access. We connected them to our phone system and they worked well. This meant that we couldn't call voice mail systems or allow incoming calls to go to our internal voice mail system. If that worked, they would be perfect for backup phones lines to a small business phone system as well as home personal use.
The Skype link device works as advertised and was easy to set up. It works well with a hard wired phone, but did not with a wireless but this is likely not the fault of the link. The problem is with SKYPE that insists on sending me quality of call question forms that cause my computer to freeze when they stack up.
This product performed as advertised. However, you should really connect it to a USB hub that receives its own power and not into a USB port on your computer. You also want to be sure and install skype before the Skytone driver (the CD that comes with this devise).
